The Lottery by Shirley Jackson - 1277 Words

The Lottery, a ritual that no one has ever thought to question, which represents any action, behavior, or idea that is passed down from one generation to the next that’s accepted and followed unquestioningly, no matter how illogical, strange, or cruel. â€Å"The oldest denizen of the town, Old Man Warner, points out that this is his seventy-seventh year participating in the ritual, called simply the lottery.†(Dubose 1) The â€Å"Lottery† is so much a part of the town’s culture, that the townspeople does not truly know what the tradition means but rejoice at the it nonetheless. That is the force that drove the theme In Shirley Jackson’s the â€Å"Lottery† with her use of setting, symbolism, suspense, and characters as she exemplifies blindly following tradition with obedience can be dangerous. The lottery is an extreme example of what can happen when traditions are not questioned or addressed critically by new generations because of the infam ous word tradition. Jackson lets us know the time of the lottery at the outset of the story. From the description of the mens talk of tractors and taxes (Jackson 262) and the depiction of Mr. Summers wearing a clean white shirt and blue jeans (Jackson 262), we may assume that we are in the twentieth century, making the storys impact more immediate. Lady Macbeths Strategy in William Shakespeares Play...

Lady Macbeths Strategy in William Shakespeares Play Macbeth In the seventh scene of act one Macbeth has left the banquet, and expresses his doubts about murdering Duncan in a monologue. Lady Macbeth comes in, and argues with Macbeth, until she manages to convince him, that he has to murder Duncan. To do that Lady Macbeth uses mainly two arguments. Letting I dare not? wait upon ?I would? like the poor cat i? the adage? (lines 43-44). Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth here that he shouldn?t let his chance slip away. Now Duncan is in his castle, now Macbeth can murder him, and now Macbeth can become king. If he waits the chance is gone, and Macbeth never will have a chance to become king, as Duncan already announced, that his son†¦show more content†¦He doesn?t even notice that, but his sub consciousness accepts as a fact, that he HAS sworn it. Another rhetorical device Lady Macbeth uses is that of a rhetorical question: ?Art thou afeared to be the same in thine own act and valour, as thou art in desire (lines 39-41). Everybody KNOWS that your wishes most of the times have to differ from the way you act. Lady Macbeth nonetheless makes Macbeth by that question believe, that he has to act according to his wishes, no matter if that ?hurts? other people. She taunts him and his honours, which forces Macbeth to respond to to act in order not to look like a coward, to defend himself: ?And wakes it [the hope] now, to look so green and pale at what it did so freely ? (...) and live a coward in thine own esteem? (lines 36 - 43); She, as well, attacks his ?manhood?: ?When you durst do it [the murder], then you were a man? (line 49). He was a man as he had had the thought of murdering Duncan and would be even more to her, if he would actually do it. On the one hand she appeals to his ambition here, on the other hand she uses her main rhetorical device, and the one that finally ?gets? Macbeth to do what she wants him to: She uses her ?woman?s weapons?. This gets extremely clear in lines 47-58. Lady Macbeth indicates Macbeth by using the formal ?you? that she will keep away from him, if he won?t murder Duncan.Show MoreRelatedWilliam Shakespeares Macbeth749 Words   |  3 Pages1. Legal Aspects Free Essays

Talking about the legal aspects of healthcare administration means taking into consideration the law that governs all the transactions that are carried out within the medical field so as to protect both the medical practitioner and the patient, with a dominant motive of bringing about improved quality of life devoid of diseases. It is believed widely that knowledge and the strengthening of these legal aspects will also bring ameliorations in the field of medicine and to this end, efforts are being made to make this set of information on the legal aspects as accessible as possible by feeding them into both the electronic media such as computers, televisions, and radios among others, and print media comprising the newspapers, journals, magazines, and periodicals among others. The ninth edition of the legal aspects of health tried to fulfill this purpose by taking a historical approach to the legal aspects of health care so as to showcase the accruals that have been made through these undertakings plainly when addressing their counterparts who are the pharmacists, physicians, physical therapists, assistant physicians, imaging technicians and respiratory therapists among others. We will write a custom essay sample on Legal Aspects or any similar topic only for you Order Now Apart from the eighth edition chapter which revised the important issues of patient safety and sought to provide self assessment in evaluating the prospects of healthcare organizations, the World Wide Search chapter sought to inculcate global awareness in health and law –related spheres. This culminated in the ‘’last chapter journey to excellence’’ which after a decade of survey introduced an exotic approach into bolstering these laws to better the medical field by bringing healthcare institutions together (Pozgar Santucci, 2006). On the other hand, the basic concepts of insurance portend the derivative, a table which shows the financial transactions that occur between two players; the insurer and the insured, in the field of insurance. The balance between what the two should pay each other being directly proportional to the magnitude of the danger involved for both parties. Although this concept is used as a formula to calculate the â€Å"expected payoff†, it is not yet adequate since it ignores the concept of inflation. According to Durbin, (1990) this problem can be solved by â€Å"discounting payoffs by a risk less return† and â€Å"using risk –adjusted probabilities that is â€Å"risk-neutral probabilities†. When calculating the payoffs. In a case whereby the insurer fails to dissolve risks through decentralization, the standoff can be resolved by â€Å"assuming the market price to be the value which will be used to infer the risk-neutral probabilities that determines these values† Durbin maintains that workers compensation insurance differs from liability insurance since in the former it is mandatory for employers to subscribe for their employees with the major cost component of workers compensation being loss of wages. This also covers occupational injuries and diseases picked at work-the employer assumes responsibility regardless of whose fault it was. It covers against dangers ranging from injuries, diseases, rehabilitation of the employee, loss of salary, medical treatment, to death. Conversely, liability insurance is a coverage that protects against claims against the insurance holder of property damage, personal injury, and negligence. The complainants could be the employees, the repair people, delivery people who may come into contact with the business property. There are two types of liability insurance: liabilities to non-members which covers mostly under a Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) terms and to members of the firm comprising employees and partners. The CGL normally covers payments resulting from accidents, immediate medical expense as a result of the above, the attorney fee and investigation expenses and the cost of court bonds. The difference between claims made and occurrence coverage is that the latter caters for claims made and reported to the insurer while the contract remains in force. During the primordial years when the policy is being renewed, the premium increases to take into account the potentiality of claims being reported from both current and previous policy periods. The former, normally regarded as the traditional form of coverage on the other hand is used to provide professional liability insurance. It caters for injury or damage incurred during the policy period regardless of when the claims are reported. Occurrence coverage also provides long term protection for any covered claims that may arise at any time in future (Robinson Scherlen, 2007). Reference. Durbin, D. Borba, P. Sihanoukville, known as Kampong Som, is one of the most attractive provinces of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Visitors can reach there by bus via National Highway No. 4 or by local fly provided by Cambodia Angkor Air. Sihanoukville borders Koh Kong to the North, Kampot to the East, and the Gulf of Thailand to the South. The area of the province totals 2,561. 20 square kilometers. 1 Recognized by both local and regional countries as a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club on May 26, 20112, Sihaknoukville was named â€Å"The Rising Star of the Southwest†. Sihanoukville has attracted an increasing number of local and foreign tourists and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia. It is home to outstanding, beautiful white sand beaches which are home to natural habitats and diverse flora and fauna. Sihaknoukville encourages all tourists to its’ cultural and historical attractions, especially those who would only otherwise visit Siem Reap-Angkor and Phnom Penh. Sihanoukville’s unforgettable, unspoiled islands and shining white, yellow and golden sands demand a visit! II. The Beautiful Island and Beach Life in paradise is possible on Koh Rong. It is one of the Gulf of Thailand’s most gorgeous and loveliest islands and located about 25 kilometers off the cost of Sihanoukville. 3 Koh Rong, with white sand beaches and turquoise water, is a dreamy tropical paradise seen rarely on earth. Koh Rong has been called the ‘Star of the Islands’ due to its natural diversities. On the southwestern side of Koh Rong, the beach stretches for nearly five kilometers of virgin white sand, fringed with palm trees and dazzling turquoise water. 4 The southernmost cove of Koh Rong hosts a beach, locally called ‘Long Set Beach’ after a farmer who lives there growing coconuts, mangoes and cashews. Snorkelers can see schools of colorful rabbit fish, sergeant fish and parrot fish. 5 There are seven bays on the island, with enough to keep even the most active visitor busy, with diving, snorkeling, mountain biking, trekking, kayaks and motorbike treks, as well as plenty of sand, sun and sea for those with more relaxed tastes. The increased number of tourists has led to an accelerating increase in the number of bungalows built, where tourists can truly enjoy living with nature. Koh Rong is still remarkably pristine and undeveloped. There are no roads, all transport is by boat and the only electricity is sourced from generators. In the future changes are a certainty, so come and visit Koh Rong now before the hordes arrive. If youve been to one of the islands off Sihanoukville before this year, Koh Rong Saloem was probably it. Lazy Beach has been the accommodation hub for the islands of Sihanoukville for more than six years now, and the island is still just as lovely and laidback as ever. 6 Shaded by pine trees and benefiting from a daily sweep to keep it spotless, the golden sands of Lazy Beach make for excellent daytime sunning. With a wide coastline, soft white sand, warm water and romantic bungalows where one should be able to catch a beautiful sunrise, it is impossible to get bored here. â€Å"Beautiful golden sands of Lazy Beach coupled with the azure of sea-what a remarkable, unforgettable picture! † a foreign tourist remarked. The water around the beach has many snorkeling options and other parts of Koh Rong Saloem are a favorite of divers and fishing enthusiasts from the mainland. In the evening, you can watch the deep pink sunsets from the beach with a tropical cocktail in hand. Koh Rong Saloem is the most well-known of the Sihanoukville islands; its still an excellent choice for a relaxed weekend. If you’re after air-conditioning and luxury resorts, Koh Ta Kiev is not for you! It is inhabited only by a handful of Cambodian soldiers and fisherman. Here, you can experience the wilderness as it was meant to be. Among the best beaches in Sihaknoukville, there are three lovely yellow sand beaches shaded by pine trees that make for excellent snorkeling on the island and its coral reefs. If you are feeling adventurous and would like to do a bit of wildlife-spotting, the best choice is Koh Ta Kiev. It takes less than an hour to get to one of the three yellow sand beaches surrounded by pine trees; from there, trek into the jungle where you can view more than 100 species of birds as well as some other interesting types of wildlife such as the carnivorous pitcher plant. 7 Snorkelers will also get their fill, and can see giant mussels that aren’t found at any of the other islands. This undeveloped island is soon to be developed, but right now, you can enjoy an untouched tropical paradise. Being part of the Ream National Park, Koh Thmei, paradise with lots of insects is an exciting destination for nature lovers and wildlife spotters. The abundance of wildlife provides great opportunities for bird-watchers including views of sea-eagles hunting and schools of dolphins are regularly spotted swimming along the coast. The beach next to the boat dock is a sea of thousands of glittering shells for those who dont want to spend time underwater. The beach to the east of the dock is a lovely pine-shaded beach of yellow sand and if you get there early enough, you can catch a gorgeous sunrise. Visitors can enjoy activities including snorkeling on the reef located just offshore, kayaking and swimming. With its radiant stretch of white sand and clear shallow and placid waters, Sokha Beach wins our vote for the most eye-pleasing and relaxing beach in Sihanoukville. Catering mostly to the wealthy, Sokha is a one-kilometer-long crescent of sand that lacks the ubiquitousness of the seafood shacks in other beaches. It is quiet, exclusive and has gazebos and first-class bars run by the resort. A small portion of the beach is still open to the public, but the rest is only available to hotel guests or those who pay for a day pass, which also includes access to the resorts pool. Although the privatization of Sokha Beach is a loss for the locals, tourists can enjoy the immaculate, clean sand and hawker-free relaxation at this relatively quiet and serene beach. It is easy to see why tourists get stay for a long time at Sokha Beach. III. Luxurious Resort and Hotel After visiting and enjoying complexion of beautiful bay and beaches, luxurious accommodations welcome guests to take rest after and enrich their memory from Kingdom of Cambodia.
